Sex Product Reviews
Everything listed here is something I own and have used. I've set up the affiliate program with Toys In Babeland because they're one of a small number of places with a national reputation for carrying only quality merchandise that people at the store have personal knowledge of. (Blowfish and Good Vibrations are the other two.) Out of those few, Toys in Babeland is the only one with a web site affiliate program, so I can get a commission if anyone buys stuff through this page and will be able to afford to buy more things to review! (Hint, hint.)
Sex Toys
Unicorn
The first sex toy I ever bought. In lavender, and the smallest size (at the time it was the cheapest dildo in the Blowfish catalog and I was a poor college student). This turned out to be a fortunate choice -- the spiral ridges around the shaft give excellent stimulation, but because it's silicone, they're flexible enough to be comfortable. (Masturbation doesn't have to imitate partner sex; I find it more fun to explore all the possible differences from being with someone -- like those spirals.) Also, it will stand upright on its flat base, which is quite convenient when it's gooey after being used, or just to look at it as an objet d'art. Alas, it doesn't seem to be available any more, though Toys in Babeland and Blowfish both have other spiral-ridged dildos.
Koi
A combination dildo and battery-operated vibrator. Fred bought this for me. I was a bit leery at first because the dildo portion is larger than my Unicorn, and I had never used a vibrator. Gradually, though, I got used to it and discovered that the larger size made up for the lack of spiral ridges. I tend to use the two differently -- the Unicorn gets pulled in and out almost all the way, whereas this one I just move a little so that the vibrator extension keeps touching my clit area. It takes 3 AA batteries, which have lasted a surprisingly long time, and the noise gets softer as the batteries get more drained. It is a pain to clean, though, as the battery/control end is not waterproof.
Magic Wand
The most well-known plug-in vibrator. Ed bought me this. It's actually very good for the uses depicted on the box, massaging shoulders and back after too much time hunched over the keyboard. But if the very loud buzzing doesn't distract you, this vibrator has power behind it. It's great for a quick orgasm; it can actually get a little numbing after a long while on the same area and I tend to keep moving the head around the pubic area. However, that power makes it work even through clothing. You can also get attachments (G-Spotter, Deluxe G-Spotter, Gee Whiz, Gee Whizzard, and Wonderwand) that fit over the large ball-shaped head.Consumable Supplies
Liquid Latex
Fun stuff. The first time I tried it out on my nipples, I walked around topless for more than an hour just looking at them, and feeling them once the latex dried; it was just so cool to see and touch these nipples done in black rubber.
Kama Sutra Weekender Kit
(Includes Mint Tree and Wild Clove bathing gels, Original Oil of Love, Mint Pleasure Balm, Honey Dust and feather applicator) This didn't do much for me -- mostly it was the flavors, I think. The Pleasure Balm looked and smelled exactly like a mint gel toothpaste, not exactly erotic (for me -- your mileage may vary). I didn't like the smell of the Wild Clove bathing gel either, but I did like the mint bathing gel. The other stuff was OK, but I'd like to try different Kama Sutra scents/flavors in hopes of finding a better one.Condoms
Avanti Polyurethane Condoms
Definitely Ed's favorite for sensation. Fred and Simon have never complained either. These are made of a different material than the standard latex, and supposedly have a higher breakage rate than latex because polyurethane is less stretchy. I've never had one break with Ed, so lube seems to make the difference, because Fred and I had both latex and polyurethane condoms break on us at times (without lube). And the variety of lubes one can use with Avantis is greater, because oil-based lubricants don't dissolve polyurethane the way they do latex. So they're worth the somewhat higher price.Lubes
Most of these are indistinguishable from one another if I'm the one using them to masturbate; I like them all. It involves a little more friction for Ed to masturbate, for us to have sex with a condom, or for him to try and fist me, so Ed's comments will be used quite a lot here.Astroglide
Ed says it's like Probe which is OK, "but stickier, though I may have just put too much on."ForPlay Succulents
These are flavored, so you know they're edible. One time I accidentally got some regular non-edible lube in my mouth (having forgotten it would still be on Ed) -- boy, did I get diarrhea later that night! So I really like lubricants that are meant to be edible, and the peach flavor of this edible line tastes/smells very good (and actually like peaches). I admit that I haven't done more than smell the other flavors in stores, yet, but there are several I definitely want to try.On the other hand, Simon wouldn't even let me put this on him -- I suppose he didn't want to smell like peaches. Nonetheless, this stuff is really good if you want to have lubricant and oral sex without a shower in between.
Liquid Silk
"Keep some water handy," Ed says, "and afterwards if you take a shower your hands will get even more pruny, super-moisturized." This stuff (like many water-based lubes) can be revitalized when it seems to be drying out by adding some water. Without planning in advance to have some water around, you're likely to add more lube and end up going through the bottle faster than necessary.Men's Cream
This is an oil-based lube, so it can't be used with latex condoms, but it's meant for jerking off anyway. I bought Ed some as a gift. His thoughts: "It's sort of like Vaseline, but it's thinner and it cleans up easier." He's looking for more in local stores to see if he can avoid shipping costs, so I guess it was a good present.Wet
Ed's favorite from the old version of the water-based lube sampler Blowfish offers (Toys in Babeland has a different lube sampler); he describes it as "like Armorall." But now neither Toys in Babeland or Blowfish seems to sell it.
